Places to go...SoCo

One of the greatest joys in my life is exploring new places.  I don't like to say "traveling" because I feel like that should be reserved for a trip that requires a passport.  My life, as a mom of two awesome teens is most often filled with local trips, visits to see family and checking out cool places here in the U.S.

Most recently we ventured into downtown Austin, Tx.  South Congress or "SoCo" to be exact.  We spent the day browsing through shops, people watching and munching at a couple of the iconic eateries in the area.

Since we are self-proclaimed foodies, our first stop was of course for lunch.  We decided on Homeslice Pizza.  Which, by the way is out of this world amazing!  It's the kind of pizza you talk about at work, dream about at night and contemplate how and when you will be having it again.  SO good.  Anyway, funny story...Homeslice Pizza has TWO restaurants located next to each other.  One is a normal, regular sized pizza place.  The other is a to-go shop.  They are called Homeslice-Too.  This is the one we saw first.  Did we wonder how in the world they could serve the number pizzas they would need to in order to be famous in that tiny shop?  Of course!  Did we really care how that fact came to be?  Nah, not so much.  We moved quick and scored a spot together at a tiny counter with four metal chairs.  We waited patiently for our pizza, ate and left very happy.  It wasn't until we walked another 20 fee that we saw the "other" place.  Most likely that place would have had real tables and a server etc.  Oh, well we still had great pizza and scored a great street front-people-watching spot. Good times!

With a blue sky ahead and crisp wind to our back, we headed up South Congress.  If you are into people watching (and who isn't?) this is the place to be on a Sunday afternoon.  Hippies, hipsters, kids, dogs, 20 somethings, tourists, GreenPeace types...you name it, they're here.  The sights, sounds and smells of SoCo can't be beat. There are food trucks tempting you from every direction, booths set up and people selling all of kinds of cool trinkets and treasures.  Very cool and very Austin.

We stopped by one of the popular murals and took a few pics and then headed to Big Top Candy Shop.  If I didn't know about it from friends and Food Network, I would not have expected what we saw.  They have ALL kinds of candy and ice cream treats.  My kids went crazy filling their bucket with oodles of flavors of salt water taffy.  So fun!  We'll be going back for sure.  The rest of the afternoon was spent checking out little boutiques and western wear shops.
It was a great time and the best part was being together, laughing and making memories.  These little adventures always bring us closer and make my heart sing!
