Places to go...Fredricksburg

One of our favorite things to do as empty nesters is take day trips and try something new or different. On a beautiful Sunday back in October we woke up and decided we needed to head to Fredericksburg. It's a cute town that offers a variety of vineyards to visit, unique shops and of course German food. We were motivated by a particular wine we tried at a friend's 4th of July party. The wine we were after is called Granny's Apple Pie from Fat Ass Ranch and Winery. It's sweet and warm and is great over ice or in a glass. It's not our usual wine of choice but it's fun to have something a little unexpected for guests during the holidays and it's fun to ask if anyone wants a glass of Fat Ass wine!  We sampled their Texas Red, Strawberry Fields and Granny's Apple Pie (just to make sure it was still good, it was 👍) and decided on bringing home a couple of bottles of the Texas Red and Apple Pie. It's on the pricey side at about $30 per bottle but its a ni

North San Gabriel River, Georgetown, Texas Hello! Way back when I set up this little blog and then got busy with life. Don't we all? The other day as I was researching for an upcoming trip I realized I had some tips that I wanted to share and document so that I wouldn't forget for future trips and remembered I had started this blog. So here I am back but not the same. Life is a lot different than it was 6 years ago. My oldest will be graduating from Texas A&M soon and my youngest, also at Texas A&M,  is a Sophomore . I'll be posting details of our latest trips and recipe tweaks and anything else I think I need to document so that I don't forget :).  Please come back and visit. xoxo, Sandra

One of the greatest joys in my life is exploring new places.  I don't like to say "traveling" because I feel like that should be reserved for a trip that requires a passport.  My life, as a mom of two awesome teens is most often filled with local trips, visits to see family and checking out cool places here in the U.S. Most recently we ventured into downtown Austin, Tx.  South Congress or "SoCo" to be exact.  We spent the day browsing through shops, people watching and munching at a couple of the iconic eateries in the area. Since we are self-proclaimed foodies, our first stop was of course for lunch.  We decided on  Homeslice Pizza .  Which, by the way is out of this world amazing!  It's the kind of pizza you talk about at work, dream about at night and contemplate how and when you will be having it again.  SO good.  Anyway, funny story...Homeslice Pizza has TWO restaurants located next to each other.  One is a normal, regular sized pizza place.  The

So often I find myself taking an idea for a recipe or craft and tweaking it and then forgetting what I did differently to suit my needs.  Did I reduce the sugar?  Replace it with something else?  Bake it for less time?  What?!!?  So, in an effort to save my sanity and keep the peeps in my home happy I decided to create this blog.  I chose the name "The Sassy Mockingbird" because it describes how I see myself when I take a published recipe, craft or whatever and make it mine.  I hope that you enjoy the changes I make.  If not, feel free to make your own changes ;-).
